1. Grand Canyon

Merely an hour and half north of Flagstaff is the world-famous Grand Canyon National Park. It just wouldn’t be a list of best camping spots without the Grand Canyon! There are many campsites in and around the Grand Canyon, but there are few we’re going to mention: Bright Angel Campground and Indian Garden Campground from the South Rim and the less traveled Cottonwood Camp near the North Rim. These trails are for the adventurous and not the faint of heart! Hike down into the canyon and experience the beauty first hand. No giant RVs or trailers to block your view here. Don’t forget to visit the beautiful Havasu Falls!

2. Lockett Meadow

If you’re a native of Flagstaff, you know about Lockett Meadow! Just outside of Flagstaff, with views of the famous San Fransisco Peaks, this primitive campsite is perfect for those who relish true mountain camping in Flagstaff. The Inner Basin trail begins here in Lockett Meadow and will take you into the heart and peaks of the mountains. The sites cost $14.00 per night on a first come first serve basis. The facilities include 17 single unit sites, picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilet (no drinking water).

3. Kaibab Lake Campground

Just 60 miles from the Grand Canyon, and 35 miles from Flagstaff, lies Williams, Arizona. For those of you who prefer to bring along your motorhome or travel trailer and camp in style, this spot is for you. Over 60 campsites surround the beautiful, peaceful Kaibab Lake. No hookups are offered but there are group areas, composting toilets and pit toilets, recycle collection bins, garbage bins, potable water, small boat ramp, wheelchair accessible fishing pier, sewage dump station and an Amphitheater with occasional interpretive programs. The cost is $15 per night.

4. Dogtown Lake Campground

Located a short distance from Kaibab Lake Campground in Williams, Dogtown Lake is a medium sized scenic body of water surrounded by trees. There are 52 campsites that cost $12 per night. No hookups, but amenities include tables, tent pads, fire rings, picnic ramada w/ barbeque grills and tables, small boat launch ramp, pit toilets, garbage and recycle bins, and potable water hydrants throughout the campground.

5. Rock Crossing Campground

Last but not least is Rock Crossing Campground in Clints Well. Just 2 miles from Blue Ridge Reservoir, Rock Crossing Campground is about an hour and a half from Flagstaff. The drive on the 89 from Flagstaff is beautiful as you pass by Lake Mary and Mormon Lake on your way through the pines. Relax, hike or mountain-bike through these canyon carved lands. $8 per night per single unit site. No hookups, but smaller motorhomes and trailers are allowed, vault toilets, 34 single unit sites, 2 double sites, fire rings, tables, cooking grills, and drinking water.

The festival will have two locations. The first will be in downtown Flagstaff, Saturday January 30th. During the downtown takeover, there will be tons of awesome events, activities.. and snow! 1. Flagstaff is a Winter Wonderland

For most Arizonans, the traditional idea of Christmas doesn’t really ever come to fruition. There’s no (real) snow and no need for fireplaces, just a slightly chillier than usual desert landscape. This year not only did Flagstaff just get a solid dusting of snow, the weather forecast is predicting a snowy Christmas Eve and Christmas day! Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

2. Pine (Christmas) Trees all Around

There’s no more iconic symbol for Christmas than the Christmas tree. Flagstaff just so happens to have them growing in quite a few of our front and back yards! We’re surrounded by tall, beautiful trees all around here in Flagstaff. It just so happens that we are located in the world’s largest contiguous ponderosa pine forest! It’s like we’re preparing for the holidays all year round!

This “star party” is part of the Flagstaff Festival of Science this weekend, in collaboration with the Flagstaff Dark Skies Coalition. This family-friendly event will take place from 3-10pm each of the three days it’s running and will feature scientific lectures, events, and stargazing. All along the beautiful trail system in buffalo park there will be telescope viewing stations and events aimed at engaging kids and allowing them to experience science, stars, and space to expand their imaginations. Of course the expansiveness of space is enough to stretch all of our imaginations, so the fun won’t be limited to the youngsters!
